From the Studio:
Serio Press is pleased to unveil our debut publication with Carlos Ramirez whose work we have long admired. "REBEL" is one of the artist's most momentous editions to date in both size and complexity, and it confronts the increasingly dire circumstances of our relationship with a capitalistic society.
From the Artist:
'Rebel' is a conversation, juxtaposition and contrast of past, present, and future, combining popular and iconic culture along with historical imagery that for me personally illustrates, highlights, and questions the trajectory of America as a society. I found this image haunting; a 1901 mugshot of a Native American inmate from the McNiely Island Penitentiary, and decided to use it as a visual testimonial of our past in contrast to current popular branding that has become so ingrained in our minds.
Artist Bio:
Carlos Ramirez was born in 1967 in the Coachella Valley (California) where he is currently based. He was formerly part of the artist collaboration The Date Farmers with Armando Lerma for over a decade. The duo’s work was exhibited in museums such as Oakland Museum of California, Laguna Art Museum and Palm Springs Art Museum. The Date Farmers began working independently in 2017 and ever since Ramirez has been blazing a trail with his detail drenched, mixed media works that echo his Mexican-American heritage rooted in California pop culture.
