From the Artist:
Muchacho de la Sandía (The Watermelon Boy) is inspired by the work of one of my favorite Mexican painters: Rufino Tamayo. The original painting is currently on display at the Mexican embassy in Paris.
For some reason, watermelons have always been depicted in Mexican art, perhaps because of their colors. They can be found, for example, in the paintings of Frida and Diego and in my childhood textbooks. So, I found it amusing to revisit that idea and create a sort of pin-up series of sensual boys savoring watermelons: a perfect way of talking about Mexican artists in Paris.
I was thrilled with the idea of a collaboration with the masters of silk-screen printing at Serio Press. The process of adapting the painting into a serigraph was fascinating. It took us several weeks of testing. Digitally, we included the black layer with details, which simulates the stroke of a pencil, a delicacy. In the end we used 12 inks.
From the studio:
This collaboration with Rodr íguez happened mostly virtually, since he is located in Mexico City. We, at the studio, digitally separated most of the colors in the painting, and then invited Carlos to make digital drawing layers to go on top. The layers Carlos drew added all the shadows, accentuated highlights, and tied in everything together with linework. The hand drawn separations brought a fantastic organic element to the artwork, really bringing the print to life.

Artist based in Mexico City, known for his drawings, paintings, and ceramics that explore the male body, the sexual desire as a creative impulse, and issues of gender and identity.
Inspired by classical painting, naïve art and porn, his images reveal scenes of men naturally engaged in their games and fantasies, from a fun perspective.
